Why Check?
Background checking (vetting) is used by employers as a security screen for job candidates, especially for applicants seeking a position that requires high security or a position of trust,. With trust comes access to sensitive company information and company assets, including financial assets. Hence the process.
The process tests the honesty and integrity of the applicant. For example, if an applicant had a criminal history and declared it, even though he or she knew it would affect their job prospects, the applicant would be rated highly for (current) honesty and integrity. If a person failed to disclose a criminal conviction, then one would have to question that persons’ honesty and integrity.
At a lower scale, but not less important, is the person who falsifies academic records, exaggerates their previous work experience or deletes aspects of their employment history to place them in a better position as a candidate for a new role. Again, this may demonstrate a lack of honesty and/or integrity.
The process also educates your staff that you are serious about honesty and trust. By developing a system of vetting for your critical staff, you create a clear culture among your key people of honesty and integrity.
Ask yourself this, would you place an appropriate qualified person in a position of trust with access to your money, if that person was in a perilous personal financial situation? If the answer is no, then you need to start vetting your key people.
